Canadians sure love their booze. More than 80% of us like a cocktail here and there or a more steady stream of beer. It's hard to find a social event not centred around the stuff — in Manitoba, you can even get a glass of wine while getting your hair done. We drink regularly: More than 20% of us above the low-risk limits, and many of us Monday to Friday with a few more thrown back on the weekend. And yet we routinely lowball our guess at how many whenever the doctor asks, perhaps knowing that 200+ different cancers are associated with the stuff (an OECD report released this week warned booze kills more people globally than HIV/AIDS, violence and tuberculosis combined). Our relationship with alcohol is a complicated one: No matter how hard prohibitionists tried to get us off the bottle, we just kept on coming back. To mark the May 2-4 Long Weekend, the National Post found out who drinks what and how much (and what it costs).
